GENERAL FAQ.
So what's this game's deal?
We're glad you asked! Welcome to Awash, a character-driven game focused on the mystery of a colorless town, the restoration of said color, and the consequences that come of each and every character choice. With eerie, folkloric overtones and a mix of exploratory and quest events, the game's plot will depend entirely on the choices, relationships and solutions characters make.
What is the IC/OOC day ratio?
The game will run on a 1:1 IC:OOC day ratio! Each IC day will be equivalent to one OOC day.
Does the game have a plot?
It does! The game will have an overarching plot, with monthly events and character quests that will contribute to it. That said, the path of the plot will be decided entirely by the characters, as there will be no NPCs or other factors to determine it for them.
There are no NPCs?
Awash will have no NPCs, and zero NPC influence. While the Town itself may display its approval or disapproval for character actions in the form of events, there will otherwise be zero NPC interaction. There are no other people living in the town outside of the player characters as well.
My character has a color?
You bet! Each character will be assigned a hexadecimal color upon entering the Town. This will correlate to a shade of color that represents the character and their impact on the world around them.
They will only know this shade by their log-in on their laptop, but it will fall into one of three general colors -- red, blue and yellow. This color will have a large impact on what sorts of color they bring back to the Town, what sorts of quests appear to be offered at all, and even the possible impacts and outcomes of those quests.
It's individual for each and every character, and no two characters will be able to have the exact same impact on the Town!
OOCly, this color will be assigned to characters in their app acceptance, depending on which color is chosen for the character. If you have a preference for a particular hexidecimal color, feel free to request an untaken one, or the mods will assign one to them!
So what sorts of things can my characters do?
Well... anything, really! The only thing stopping them is their own (or other player characters') conscience, after all! If you want to delve into the creepy colorless woods, you can do that! If you want to burn down half the town, you can do that too, though other characters may not be happy about it. The sky's the limit, so feel free to contact us if you'd like to spread your wings.
My character can burn down the town/murder someone/be a terrible person?
Yep, nothing's going to stop you; there's no NPC-run law enforcement, no laws against it, but... well, there's no guarantee the Town isn't going to dislike it, either. If you'd like to do anything like this, please contact us so we can give you the formal go ahead, and let you know what sorts of events will be happening around it! The Town isn't 100% sentient, but it isn't entirely dead, either. Large changes to it will have an impact on the sorts of quests characters receive, the sorts of events that will occur, and other, similar scenarios.
If your plot involves any other players, please be certain to get their permission first!
So what happens if my character dies?
They'll come back -- in two days! That said... they'll come back a little different. When they return, they will be almost sketch-like; they will be white, with zero features to say who they are, and an inability to speak at all. Over the course of another two days, they will slowly regain their features, colors, and their ability to speak again. What order they regain these things is up to you. They will be themselves and be able to process what is happening, but will not be able to interact with others the way they would like to.
Similarly, while they are sketchy, characters can interact with laptops but will be unable to log into their own, as if somehow there's a strange error when they try to get into their own laptop. This effect will fade away as they are no longer sketchy; for example, if they are only mostly restored, they can log into their laptop but it will be glitchy and difficult to work with until they are completely restored to normal.
However, their death will also cause the Town to lose some of the color that has been restored -- and their close CR will lose a memory of your character permanently. You are welcome to plot out who will forget and what will be forgotten with other players. Please let us know in your character's color log when your character is killed so we can tell everyone what color has faded away!
The character's body remains exactly where the character died, unless other characters pick it up or do something with it. The body will start to fade, colors in the body draining away until all that's left is little more than a greyish shell, at which point the body collapses into dust.
The entire process takes place within the first day after death.
Will my characters have their powers?
Yes, they will. We're not going to restrict characters' powers or limit them. However, we do ask that you use your best judgement in what characters can do, and be fair to your fellow players! Similarly, some of the mysteries and quests of the town won't be able to be solved by brute strength or special powers, so never fear if your character is a little less powered up; they'll have their time to shine too.
Can I do anything I want with my character's powers?
That's our hope! If your character has some cool power or canon ability, bring it to us and let's figure out how to work it into the game! We absolutely want people to have the freedom to make use of their characters' abilities and strengths, even in a place like this town, so please feel free to contact us so we can make it happen. Do keep in mind that some things might not work quite the same as it used to, though... who knows what'll happen.
What is the Town like?
The Town is divided into three “districts”, named Ruga, Bluo, Flavo on rusting, colorless plates pinned to buildings. It's impossible, right now, to tell which buildings are which. There is no color, writing, or anything to make it clear, and the buildings are empty.
For now, the only thing differentiating the districts is the style of the buildings. In Ruga, the buildings appear to be brick, though as colorless as the rest, lining cobblestone streets. In Bluo, there are many canals and even boat housing on top of colorless, unmoving water. At least, it's probably water, though it just eerily looks grey. In Flavo, the buildings are more akin to cottages and the scenery more of a quiet woods.
In the middle of the town, in an otherwise empty circular area, there is a well, as colorless as the rest of the town. Please see the locations page for more information.
So my character will live in these buildings?
Your character will be assigned a home via a letter when they arrive, but they by no means have to stay there. They can move as they please, and nothing will stop them. It's not like there's currency here, after all. Please go here to change or check your housing.
My character is a vampire/cannibal/etc, what now?
Good luck with that! We look forward to seeing how you handle that one, and so does the Town.
(In all seriousness, if you'd like to brainstorm ways to make playing your character more fun or interesting in Awash, please feel free to contact us so we can figure out how best to make things work for your character!)
So is there a network?
There isn't a classic network; the characters won't be given phones or portable communication devices. They will, however, all find a laptop when they enter their living space. This laptop will be open to a single page -- an old school forum, grey, black and white only. It's weird that they don't need to be plugged in, but you can't drag them far from your current place of residence, or they shut off.
Characters will all have an account to post to this forum as they please; their handle will be their hexadecimal color, and their font will also be that color (no matter how they might try to change it). (Sorry, yellows, people might have to highlight your font. It's going to be a headache.)
For the sake of OOC play, please use either black, or write your tags in black as well if you intend to use your character's font color for forum tags, for the sake of readability! (Naturally, at the start, everyone's text color will appear black regardless -- oh well.)
No other webpages can be visited from this laptop; in fact, it doesn't seem as though it's connected to any internet at all. The only thing that can be accessed is this forum page -- and a writing program a la Microsoft Word, if you want to write things for yourself.
(There's also a pretty cheesy paint program with minimal functionality to draw things, but... none of the color's been restored yet, so what good is that?)
Please keep in mind that all posts and replies are public on the forum. Therefore, threadjacking can happen and is in fact encouraged on forum posts.
Aside from the forum, characters can also private message each other in either e-mail or instant message/texting fashion, though unfortunately both characters will have to be home and on their laptops to do so! If a character is trying to meet up with someone and forgets some details, they're outta luck, friends.
Tell me more about Quests.
Quests will be one of the driving factors of the game as a whole. Every month, a new set of Quests will be posted, at which point players can choose to participate in them. Successfully completing a quest will restore color, and perhaps other perks. Being unsuccessful... well, that might have a few consequences.
ICly, these Quests are posted on a Mysterious Forum Post that seems to be stickied on the forum itself. Its title is simply UNTITLED, and it seems to have been posted by someone with the handle #FFFFFF, but there's no other information. Every month, those Quests will be posted, either flat out, as rhymes or as riddles, at which point the characters can discuss, sign up for and figure out how to go about dealing with them themselves.
Granted, there's nobody there forcing them to do it, so they could just ignore them too if they really, really wanted to... but that might be a bad idea.
Please be aware that from an ooc perspective, quests may only be done to be turned in for reward in the month they are posted so that we can keep track of color changes! In other words, July's posted quests can only be completed in the month of July if you want a reward for doing so!
How far can characters go into the forest?
As far as they want to! Please contact us if your character intends to go into the woods, so we can let you know what they'll experience and find. Characters can go as far away from the Town as they'd like; the forest isn't inexhaustible, though it will certainly take a fair amount of work and travel to get through it.
Further experiences will depend on individual adventures, and will be given on a case-by-case basis.
What will my character eat?
I don't know, what will your character eat? They're going to have to figure that out, because there isn't much in the way of food in the Town. Whatever food there is, such as wildberries in the woods, is currently colorless and flavorless. It tastes and feels like ash. If characters want bread, vegetables, etc, they will have to find a way to make that happen -- which is pretty doable for those who are innovative. There are wild vegetables that can be found in the nearby fringes of the forest or in the Flavo district, and wheat can be found in the forest, nearby -- basically, if it's a basic food ingredient, it's likely around somewhere, and you're welcome to have your characters find it!
That said, there are more than enough fruits, nuts, wild vegetables and herbs, and (very strange looking) animals and fish to hunt for food; if they work for it, nobody will go hungry.
Thankfully? Everything that has its color restored has its taste restored as well.
What can I expect from events?
Events will be a mix of uncanny, strange and just plain creepy -- alongside the occasional light-hearted, adventurous or mundane. There will be a great deal of folklorish or fairy tale-esque imagery and experiences as the characters try to live their lives in the town. The overall theme is that the events will all pertain to the overall, arching plot of the game: restoring color to the town (or removing it). Game-wide events will occur once a month, and Quests will also be posted monthly, at the beginning of each month. Those will likely have overarching effects that will allow for mingle logs!
We highly encourage players to post their own mingle logs as their characters affect the game and setting!
So how does restoring color to the town work?
Great question! We will require each character to keep a post in their journal to track important threads and experiences they've had each month. The code for this can be found here, and will be submitted each AC. Please see the section about Color Logs in the Mechanics section of the FAQ below for more information.
Each month, the mods will take those pages and from there, compile what colors have been restored in which ways. These colors will be listed in each monthly mod post. Your character's personal color will have an impact on that, as we hope to have an inclusive experience and character driven restoration of the Town's color!
Be aware, some experiences may change or even take away previous colors as well -- it's up to the characters to figure out what experiences have what impact.
APPLICATION FAQ.
What characters can I app?
Canon characters from games, books, anime, movies, comics/webcomics, TV, etc whose apps will be more than 75% canon (and thus 25% headcanon or less) and OCs will be accepted at this time! You may not app a real life person, but characters based off of real life people who are nonetheless fictional characters are appable (ie characters from Sengoku BASARA). Rule 63s will also not be appable at this time. There are no minimum age requirements for characters, though if your character is exceptionally young (ie around 7 or 8) we may need to ask for justification in their application.
Unfortunately, we will not be accepting CRAUs or Canon OCs at this time, nor will AUs be accepted.
Can my character bring along their Cute Animal Companion?
If their animal companion is the sort to be with them 90% of the time, absolutely! Robots, and similar sentient companions are also more than welcome. A Pokemon trainer can absolutely bring along the Pokemon they had with them in Pokeballs, for example, for a maximum of six Pokemon on them. Please just be reasonable with what sorts of animals you're bringing with you, and how many! We may ask you to tone it down in your app if we feel it will not work in the game.
What about my animal/robot/etc character?
Animal characters, robot characters, and all of the above are entirely appable! Animals will remain animals and robots will remain robots, though if they are over 7' tall they will be made smaller for ease of interaction with the Town. For other cases, please feel free to ask below so we can help with case-by-case situations!
How many characters can I app?
There will be a player cap of 80 for the game. Each player can have up to two characters, for a total maximum character cap of 160.
We will accept applications from new players until the player cap has been filled. There is no cap on second characters for current players.
What other app restrictions are there?
For the sake of fairness, there will be a cast cap of six per canon. Likewise, each player can only play one character per cast.
Due to the size of the game and cast caps, no doubles will be allowed -- this includes characters such as Joshua from TWEWY and Joshua from Kingdom Hearts, as well as more removed examples such as Steve Rogers from MCU versus Steve Rogers from the comics.
New canons cannot be immediately applied from. There will be a two month wait period following a canon's English release date. If there is no projected English release date, it will be a two month wait from the canon's original release date.
Characters from canons that have not been translated to English are allowed, but we will require translated material to judge the app by, whether translated by the player or another source.
If you have any questions about the appability of your character, please don't hesitate to ask!
Are app challenges allowed?
We will not be accepting app challenges at this time, for the sake of completely unbiased judging of apps.
What about when we hit the player cap?
Currently, we are sticking to a bimonthly app schedule. This will only change if there is an exceptionally small number of slots for new players.
What about apping a second character?
When the game has hit player cap, applications will open on a bimonthly basis to allow people to app a second character. A new TDM will only be posted once every other round, but please feel free to use the previous one to get samples! However, to be eligible for a second character, you must have passed AC at least once with your current character.
MECHANICS FAQ.
What is AC like? Activity Check will be 25 comments, submitted across a minimum of three threads and a maximum of five threads, or one post and one to two additional thread(s) of 10 comments. Activity Check can be submitted at any time during the month; due to this, there will be no Activity Check exemptions granted. Because of the capped nature of the game, there will be no strikes.
Please come to the mods ahead of time if there are concerns to be discussed.
Hiatuses must span the length of two weeks within the month of that Activity Check to grant Activity Check exemption. No hiatus can be taken two months in a row. One month is the maximum hiatus length; if you require longer than that, please come to us directly so we can talk it over.
Further information on how to submit AC, and what AC will look like can be found here at the AC guide; please be sure to give it a read!
What format should we use for logs?
Please use the below format when posting logs to the log comm:
So what's this color log?
Every character will have an OOC color log kept in their journal (the code can be found here), in which you will record events that had an impact on your character. Those can be large, emotional things such as having CR die, or something as simple as making a new friend, depending on what sort of person your character is. It's up to player discretion to decide what counts as "impactful" when it comes to your character! The requirements are loose, so feel free to have fun with it and be creative -- what matters to each character will be very different!
A link to this log will be required for AC, as we'll be using this log to keep track of what color changes happen in Awash. Only turning in that link will not count as your threads for AC, but you're more than welcome to either use those threads or to use entirely different threads for AC. It's up to you! The log is simply a good way to keep track of what impactful things have happened in the game.
How do hiatuses work?
Don't worry, your character doesn't disappear! In fact, wherever they were when the hiatus takes effect, they'll... well, they'll stay there. As a marble statue. The statue is vulnerable to breaking, so everyone better be careful/hopefully they're not in a vulnerable position when it happens, so they don't lose an arm.
If a character were to lose an arm/limb/etc while as a statue, the corresponding limb will be broken when they are restored to their normal self.
(Naturally, all hiatus breakages must be plotted out beforehand between players!)
Of course, if you don't want to play with this mechanic, you can always just have your character on autopilot for the duration of your hiatus; please be sure to mark which it will be so that your gamemates know what to play with while you are gone!
What about drops?
When your character is dropped, they disappear as if they were never there. Their laptop disappears, and their handle will be struck through on the forum for all previous posts made by them. However, all posts and comments they've made will remain. Otherwise... well, just a little bit of color will disappear from the world, as if it was never there.
What if I want to canon update my character?
You mosey on over here! After your canon update is approved, your character will be out of action for a couple of days; they'll disappear entirely from the Town for three or four IC days, after wandering into the forest as if in a trance.
They'll return with their new canon memories and experiences, and no shoes. Weird!
If a character ever wants to follow another into the forest for their canon update, let us know! That said, canon updates will follow the same two month rule as new canons, for fairness and the sake of spoilers.
What about HMDs? TDMs? Intro logs?
There will be a HMD every other month, anon-enabled. While it will not be required to post to it, we do encourage it!
Intro logs will be posted for so long as there are regular app rounds; when the game cap is met, events will be posted to welcome newcomers into the game while still being more open to the game at large.
A new TDM will be posted every other app round; please feel free to use any previous TDMs to get samples if a new one has not been posted recently!
